When Mackenzie Pratt signed up to volunteer with the Maryland SPCA three years ago, she planned to spend her time working directly with the animals. While waiting to complete her animal handling training, she started helping with Kibble Connection—and never looked back.
“I quickly fell in love with it,” she says. “Not only do I get to work with some really awesome people, but it’s also a way to interact directly with the community and see the impact that the shelter has, which I think is really cool.”
That impact extends beyond the families Kibble Connection serves. According to Community Outreach Coordinator Austin Spafford, “Mackenzie is an all-star. She brings her best self every day she volunteers. She’s usually one of the last people to leave, sticking around to help with any late pickups. She even designed a new Excel spreadsheet that improved our Kibble Connection tracking system. I’m so grateful for her help.”
Assistant Director of Community Care & Advocacy Katie Haines agrees. “Mackenzie has such contagious positive energy when she volunteers. The pet food pantry is fast-paced and can be stressful, but she handles it with grace and stays cool under pressure.”
During college in Philadelphia, Mackenzie volunteered with the Philadelphia SPCA and then moved to Baltimore to care for her great-aunt. She ended up staying for other reasons, too.
“Baltimore is such a fun town!” she says. “I love the food scene and rooting for the Orioles.”
When she’s not volunteering, Mackenzie enjoys hiking, biking, baking, and playing corn hole—a hobby she’s taken seriously enough to win two league championships. At home in Federal Hill, she’s kept company by Jasper, a black cat who has fully embraced the indoor life.
“He used to be a stray,” Mackenzie says, “but now he’s used to the good life of too many treats and lots of lounging.”
Outreach Manager Ryan Silva says Mackenzie’s contributions go well beyond her technical skills.
“Mackenzie is truly one of a kind. She transformed our Kibble Connection community member tracking system, but just as important, her sense of humor, positivity, and willingness to jump in wherever needed make her a favorite among staff and volunteers alike.”
Whether she’s streamlining spreadsheets, helping neighbors care for their pets, or staying late to make sure no one is left behind, Mackenzie embodies the compassion, dedication, and community spirit that define the Maryland SPCA.
Thank you for all you do, Mackenzie!
