Training Basics

The Maryland SPCA is here to help you and your pet enjoy each other’s companionship. Having a well-adjusted and obedient animal will put you on that track. The Maryland SPCA’s Behavior Department offers classes and advice on how to begin a good relationship with your pet and maintain that relationship throughout the years.

We offer basic instruction to build a solid foundation for people working with their animals to make it more enjoyable for pets and people. Positive reinforcement is emphasized to make pets more trainable. The more knowledge an owner gains and the more time an owner invests, the more likely a good relationship will be formed for life. The three specific courses we offer are Positive Pooch for Adopters, All-Star Canine and All-Star Juniors.

Positive Pooch for Adopters

Positive Pooch is a free class for owners who adopt a dog from The Maryland SPCA. It covers basic tools and tips for training, responsible socialization, walking on lead, and sit and wait commands. It’s offered on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to noon on the SPCA grounds. Adopters do not have to register for the class in advance. Go to Positive Pooch for Adopters for more details.

All-Star Canine

All-Star Canine Class is a six-week course designed to help owners create positive relationships with their dogs. Many behavior problems can be prevented or solved with positive, consistent training and socialization. All–Star Canine Class teaches you how to train your dog to watch you, sit, go to your bed, leash manners and more. Adopters must register ahead of time for class by calling 410-235-8826, ext. 139 or emailing Allie, Training and Behavior Manager. Go to All-Star Canine Class for more details, including a list of upcoming sessions.

All-Star Juniors

All-Star Juniors puppy play groups are designed to help teach owners about common puppy behaviors such as jumping, nipping, barking, chewing, etc. and are for puppies 8-16 weeks of age. Housebreaking techniques and basic obedience commands are introduced including sit, down, walking on a loose lead and starting to come when called. Puppies will learn as they play and socialize! Due to the close contact between puppies, they must be current on their vaccinations. The class usually meets on Sundays at 2:30 p.m. for one hour on the SPCA grounds. Owners must bring registration materials to their first class. Go to All-Star Juniors for more details.
